These are little 6 x 6 tiles which are porcelain painted. This is an ancient technique of chinese art painting. The paints used are mineral and oxides ground into an oil base and applied to a slick glazed surface of white porcelain china or tiles. The paint then has to be fired into this glazed surface at roughly 1200 degrees. Some paints need to be fired multiple times to reach the desired effect.
